Funding for the Digitalization of CNAS and PIAS Gets Green Light from the Ministry of Health

April, 24 2024

The Ministry of Health has approved funding for the digitization of CNAS – PIAS, which includes important cybersecurity elements. The initial funding of €70 million has been increased to €100 million excluding VAT, exclusively for the digitalization of the National Health Insurance House and the optimization of the Health Insurance Information Platform (PIAS).

The third quarter of 2025 is the deadline by which the health insurance system will be digitalised.

More than 25,000 healthcare providers (hospitals, specialist outpatient clinics, laboratories, family doctors, pharmacies, medical device suppliers, home care providers) will be connected to the new PIAS platform. It is very important to underline that the current system will not be affected. The changes to PIAS will ensure a user-friendly and accessible environment for users, including those with disabilities, and will improve the interconnectivity and interoperability of the system.

Other goals included in the funding program:

– new functionalities (e.g. the digitization of documents related to medical acts) data flow -optimization electronic monitoring at genera objectives, specific objectives, activities, and performance indicators at the CNAS/CAS/medicaI service provider level

-interoperability of information systems at the inter-institutional public administration level, use of cross-organizational data, and existing resources at the national level (in line with other planned investments at this level)

More than €400 million are being invested in the digitisation of Romania’s health system through the PNRR and European funds. The funding approved today brings direct investment in digitalisation of health through Component 7 of the PNRR to €200 million, after the Ministry of Health approved funding at the end of January this year for the digitalization of health institutions under the Ministry of Health, as well as the digitalization of the Ministry’s own department.
